Since its inception in 1974, the LEOY award has grown to be recognized among Florida law enforcement as one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on their profession. Nominations are sought annually from police or sheriff's departments, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. An application is mailed to each department during the “call for nominations” period. Eligible nominees are officers up to and including the rank of sergeant. Nominations are usually accepted in July and August of each year, and should be based on overall performance from July 1 of the past year through June 30of the current year. FRF accepts only one nomination per department.
