TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Florida Retail Federation (FRF), the state’s premier trade association representing retailers for over 75 years, in recognition of World Immunization Week, shines the spotlight on the recent passage of HB279 which provides Floridians with more access to needed healthcare by allowing pharmacists to now administer any vaccinations, including travel vaccines, that are currently recommended by the Center for Disease Control. The bill, which was sponsored by Senator Aaron Bean (R-4, Jacksonville) and Representative Cary Pigman (R-55, Avon Park), overwhelmingly passed both the Senate and House chambers and is being sent to Governor Rick Scott for final approval.
“A number of our FRF members are pharmacies and businesses who support greater access to healthcare, and I’m proud of the collaboration between our members and our legislative partners in passing this much needed legislation,” said FRF President/CEO Rick McAllister. “We listened to the needs of our members, who were passionate about this issue, and worked with Senator Bean and Representative Pigman on this important bill.”
“Access to vaccinations is important for the continued welfare of our communities, and the inability of Floridians to receive vaccinations puts them, their family members and the wider community at risk,” said Senator Aaron Bean. “The one way to ensure that more people receive needed vaccinations is to make it more convenient, and this legislation increases that access and will help keep all residents and visitors safe and healthy.”
“I am very proud of the work that was done toward making this legislation successful and recognizing the vaccination needs that our constituents have, particularly in rural areas where pharmacies may be more accessible than a traditional doctor’s office,” said Representative Pigman. “I want to thank my fellow Representatives for their support and for allowing us to fill a needed hole in our state’s healthcare system.”
The last week of April each year is marked by the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners as World Immunization Week. It aims to raise public awareness of how immunization saves lives, encouraging people everywhere to vaccinate themselves and their children against deadly diseases.
